Lake McDonald
is the largest of the lakes of Glacier National Park with a surface area of
6,823 acres. It is also the longest, at over 15 km, as well as the deepest lake
at 141 meters. We stayed at Fish Creek Campground in West Glacier
and Lake McDonald Lodge is about a 20 min drive. Before you hit the
Lodge, there is a pullout for a spectacular view of the lake. You can also view
the lake from the Lodge but parking may be an issue.
Two words: ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! If you are in the area, be sure to take a few
minutes to enjoy this amazing scenery.
The lake is remarkably clear. This is due to the year long low temperatures
that prohibit the growth of planktons. You can see the presence of a
variety of colored rocks and pebbles just below the water surface and on the
shores. The rocks range in color from dark red to maroon, and from green to
blue. Colored pebbles can be seen in abundance on the shores of Lake
McDonald.
It's also a great place to skip rocks 😀
